Wirewound Resistors – High Power Alloy Wire Resistors for Brake, Load & Current Sensing

2026-10-21

Wirewound resistor is constructed by winding alloy resistance wire on a high-temperature ceramic core. It is the preferred power resistor for DC and low-frequency industrial circuits, featuring high power rating and strong short-time surge withstand. Standard single-winding designs carry inherent parasitic inductance, which is the key design trade-off.Guangdong Qingda supplies both conventional inductive wirewound resistors and Ayrton‑Perry non-inductive wirewound resistors, in vitreous enamel, cement and aluminum housed packages. Global and Hong Kong orders are handled by Qingda Industrial Co., Limited with compliance documents and cross-border delivery.

Construction & Manufacturing

High-purity alumina ceramic core as insulation skeleton. Resistance wire (Nichrome, Constantan or Manganin) is wound with controlled turns, then terminated and protected by enamel coating, cement or thermally conductive aluminum housing.

  • Nichrome wire: high temperature resistance for power braking and discharge

  • Manganin / Constantan wire: ultra-low TCR for precision high-current sensing

  • Single winding: low cost, obvious parasitic inductance

  • Ayrton‑Perry non-inductive winding: counter-wound layers cancel magnetic flux and minimize inductance

Comparison:

  • Wirewound: high power & surge capacity; inductive by default, not for RF

  • RI80 glass glaze: high voltage, high resistance bleed

  • MF metal film: low noise precision small signal, low power

  • MELF wafer: SMT surge resistor for PCB

Key Features

  • High continuous power rating up to several kilowatts

  • Excellent short-time overload and pulse energy withstand

  • Low TCR; Manganin versions down to ±5ppm/℃ for precision sensing

  • Accurate resistance, easy for low mΩ values

  • Multiple packages: vitreous enamel, cement, aluminum housed with screw mounting

  • Wide operating temperature, vibration resistant for industrial chassis

Important note: Standard wirewound resistors have significant self-inductance, which causes oscillation in high-speed pulse circuits. Choose non-inductive wirewound or RF thin-film resistors for high-frequency paths. Wirewound resistors are not suitable for GΩ-level high resistance; use RI80 glass glaze instead.

Product Series

  1. Vitreous enamel tubular wirewound: axial lead, 1W~30W, for PCB assembly

  2. Cement encapsulated wirewound: flame retardant, 5W~100W, cost-effective for power boards

  3. Aluminum housed wirewound: potting with thermal compound, mountable on heat sink, 20W~3000W, widely used for braking, pre-charge and electronic load, 4-terminal sensing type available.

FAQ

Q: Inductive vs non-inductive wirewound?A: Inductive for DC / 50Hz steady brake load; Ayrton‑Perry non-inductive for switching pulse circuits requiring low inductance.Q: Can wirewound resistors be used for RF circuits?A: Not recommended. Special RF microwave thin-film resistors are required for GHz bands.Q: Must aluminum housed types use a heat sink?A: Derating is mandatory without heat sink under full power.Q: Hong Kong delivery available?A: Yes, arranged via Qingda Industrial Co., Limited.Q: Difference between wirewound manganin resistor and manganin shunt?A: Manganin shunt is dedicated 4-terminal low-ohm sensing part; manganin wirewound suits higher power sensing scenarios.
